About 18 months ago – Vincent from County Wicklow, Ireland purchased our rare 1972 Land Rover Series 3 Carawagon.

Recently Vincent was aware of a “noise” that seemed to emanate from the gearbox.

As the noise got worse, he took it to a local garage who immediately advised him that he “Needed a replacement gearbox !”.

When he contacted us, we expressed some doubt, as although the Land Rover has done 160,000 miles – it has been maintained beyond belief during most of it’s life. Also – Vincent reported that the gears still selected properly.

In the end, it was decided that the Land Rover would be returned to Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, and we would “double check” the diagnosis.

So last week, we met the Carawagon off the ferry at Holyhead , and transported it back to our premises.

A short inspection confirmed our suspicions – The gearbox was still operating exactly as it should, and the noise was in fact coming from the overdrive unit.

It was decided that as the Carawagon was not used for long distance motorway driving – The overdrive could be removed without compromising the drive-ability or enjoyment of the Land Rover.

Once we gave Vincent the good news, he asked us to carry out a service and check over – before returning the Carawagon to Holyhead for the ferry trip home.

As much as we enjoy buying and selling lovely classic Land Rovers – we also enjoy maintaining them, and occasionally saving their owners from unnecessary repair bills !
