Description

458 ETW – 1955 Land Rover Series I – 86″ Survivor

Still sporting its original registration issued in Essex in October 1955 – as backed up by the original buff log book which is still present.

Following the passing of a previous owner, it languished in a barn for many years (see photo’s).

In 2006 ownership passed to a local builder who took it in exchange for some work, but it continued to reside in the barn.

Purchased in 2013 by the previous owner, there then followed a program of careful recomissioning, which included:

  • Recore of radiator
  • New antifreeze
  • New battery
  • New front road springs
  • New U bolts and shackles all round
  • New swivel oil seals
  • Rebuilt Solex Carburettor
  • New rear window for tilt
  • All new engine, gearbox and axle oils
  • New points, condenser and rotor arm
  • new thermostat

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, but it gives an indication of the work carried out.

After being used as a wedding carriage for his daughter – the previous owner then decided it was time to pass this piece of Land Rover history onto a new custodian.

So here we have a largely unrestored example of the now much sought after Series I Land Rover. It has had paintwork at some point in the very distant past, which is now showing the patina of age.

Perky 2.0 petrol engine starts at the first press of the starter button, with a great gearbox that works exactly as it should, and it rides on a set of rare 6.00 x 16 Avon Traction Mileage tyres.
