Having been in business for 45 years, we have seen one or two interesting Land Rovers come and go.
Because of this, we have quite an archive and are often called on by the Land Rover press to provide information or photographs for forthcoming articles.
This week, we were able to provide information in 3 areas – Having been contacted by Peter Galilee (LRO Magazine) who remembered seeing a couple of Pre Production (1982) 110 Land Rovers when he visited a few years ago, and we also noted a request from James Taylor – Looking for information on the Camel Trophy Range Rovers and also the South African built – Forward Control “Overlanders”
CWK
The pre production One Ten Land Rovers we had were:
CWK 2Y – a Right Hand Drive Station Wagon and
CWK 44Y – A left Hand Driver One Ten Hi Capacity pick up.
OVERLANDER
The Forward Control Campers were originally sent to South Africa as CKD (Complete Knock Down) kits.
These were the Land Rover Series IIB forward Controls – with the 110 wheelbase.
After many years, a number of unused examples were built as “Overland Campers” under the name “Overlander”.
These are a rare conversion, but we did have one back in 2000.
CAMEL TROPHY RANGE ROVER
Camel Cigarettes sponsored the first “Camel Trophy” event back in 1980. The Range Rover was used for the event in 1981 (Sumatra), 1982 (Papua New Guinea) and 1987 (Madagascar).
Many of you may have seen replica “Camel Trophy Range Rovers” – but a genuine vehicle is one of the rarest on the planet.
It was originally thought that ALL of the 1981 / 1982 vehicles were crushed after the event, but in 2004 a vehicle emerged which had been purchased by the father of one of the Holland team.
It is believed that less than a handful of the 1987 vehicles survive – and it is one of those C838 WWK – that we were lucky enough to find back in 1999.
“WWK” was used for equipment fitting and team trials, as well as being a support vehicle for the 2250km Diego Suarez to Fort Dauphin, Madagascar event.
